As a way to celebrate fashion trends and introduce new trends to the world, we have Fashion festivals organized around the world. A Fashion Week is an event wherein the fashion designers and houses showcase their latest collection of clothing on the runway, in the presence of media and potential buyers. As the name suggests, it lasts for a week (approximately) and takes place twice a year.

There are four recognized Fashion events: Paris Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. These four are the biggest fashion events as they’re held on a large scale.

The concept of Fashion-Week originated from Paris where women were asked to dress in the couture and walk from racetracks to salons. Hence, it is still known as ‘défilé de mode’ or ‘fashion parade’ in France. Watch the video to know more.

Fashion events are generally categorised into menswear and womenswear. In recent times, the trend for inter-seasonal collection has grown immensely. These collections are called Pre-Fall collection (before winter/autumn) and Resort Collection (before summer/spring). These collections generate more income/business for designers than the traditional collections. Some Fashion events are also categorised on the basis of their genres. For example, there are some Fashion events dedicated to bridal outfits like the Bangalore Fashion Week in India, some display swimwear like the Miami Swim Week and the haute-couture shows in Paris only display rare collections.

The trend of ‘See now, Buy now’ has also gained popularity in the recent past. Many big brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Moschino, etc; have used this trend. In such events, the outfits displayed on the runway are immediately available online for sale.

The audience for fashion shows get a special invitation and it is generally followed by an “after party”, where the clients, designers and buyers can interact with each other in an informal environment.
