- Space
The most basic and important element is space, as interior designing is all about designing a given space. - Lines
A common yet influential part of a design is lines. A space can be easily transformed from a dull room to an exciting space with the help of lines. There are three types of lines used in interior design namely, horizontal, vertical & dynamic. Horizontal lines are usually used to add a sense of security, cosiness and wideness to a space. On the other hand, vertical lines are used to add appeal and airy feel in the space. Similarly, dynamic lines like angular lines, curves, and zigzag lines are used to add excitement, movement and fun to a design.
- Forms or Shapes
Multiple lines when combined can create a shape or form. These shapes could be added to a design through art, furniture, décor items, room structure, etc. The shapes or form used can be mainly classified as either natural or geometrical. Natural lines or organic lines usually consist of curves and abstract shapes while geometric lines consist of angular lines and sharp closed shapes.
- Patterns
An intentional repetition of design elements can create a pattern. It can be a collection of similar lines, shapes, colours, lighting, décor items etc. It can be used to create a cohesive look with the help of similar patterns or can be used to add contrast to a design with popping elements or items. A balanced use of this element can add motion and life to a space but an overused pattern can lead to a chaotic look as well.
- Light
Light is the mood setter for a space. Any form of lighting whether its natural or artificial can reflect the purpose and the key elements of the space. Natural light can add warmth to a space and is generally used to highlight some element of design like colour or décor items. An accurate amount of natural light can be allowed in a room with the help of drapes, curtain and proper placement of windows and doors.
Artificial lights, on the other hand can add coolness to a space and highlight particular parts of space/design. These lights are usually used according to the purpose of the space (reading, cooking, relaxing, etc.), focal point of the space (art, sculpture, architecture, etc.) and the mood of the space.
- Colours
The element which reflects the attitude or personality of the people present in a space effectively is colour. It can be used to create a specific perception in our minds for the space or people. Every colour has its own meaning attached to it which makes it a lot more influential than any other element. A designer must be aware of each meaning and perception in order to design a space.
- Texture
Everything we see in a space has its own texture which can highly influence a design. For an interior designer, texture can be both, actual and visual. A visual texture is the one that can give a sense of its texture by merely looking at it while an actual texture needs a touch to be sensed. Each type has its own purpose and advantage like visual texture, for example brick wallpapers can give a sense of rustic traditional look and actual texture like silk can give a sense of softness and comfort.
